Teaching Credit System

The Scientific Board of PhD programme in Economics and Quantitative Methods (EQM) has agreed the following system of Teaching Credits. Every activity undertaken by a PhD student is awarded a number of Teaching Credits (CFU). At the end of the three-year programme, the student must accumulate at least 180 CFU (ECTS equivalent). To guarantee that a variety of formative experiences is undertaken, the Board has agreed on a cap to the discretionary activities listed below.


1. Assessed Courses (min 20 - max 60 CFU)

Comprises:

  • EQM PhD courses: the list of courses is available here.

  • PhD Summer and Winter Schools (2 CFU if duration is max 2 days, 4 CFU if duration is at least 3 days)

  • PhD Unige Schools and Other Training Courses: CFU defined by the School/Department Unige that organizes the course. 

  • Masters’ courses (corsi di laurea magistrale) at Unige: candidates can complement their programme by attended courses they have not previously taken. CFU credits are those stated in the official documentation of the course. Students must produce evidence provided by the course leader that they have passed the official examination. 


2. Public Scientific Activity (max 30 CFU)

Comprises:

  • Participation in scientific meetings, Workshops and Conferences: 1.5 CFU per day of attendance

  • Presentation in scientific meetings, Workshops and Conferences: 3 CFU for oral presentation, 2 CFU for poster presentation.


3. National and International Mobility (max 60 CFU)

Comprises:

  • Periods of study and research approved by the PhD Council. For both national and international visits, the candidate receives 3 CFU for every full working week (Mon-Fri) or any period lasting five (5) full days. For shorter periods 1 CFU can be claimed.


4. Independent Study and Research Activity (max 105 CFU)

  • Certified by the compulsory Annual Report, whose content was agreed in the Scientific Board's meeting dated  1.07.2024, and illustrated in the "Organization" section of this website (see link above).

  • End of FIRST YEAR: 30 CFU;

  • End of SECOND YEAR: 30 CFU;
  • End of THIRD YEAR: 45 CFU


5. Publications and Scientific Prizes (max 20 CFU)

Comprises:

Publication in Group A (fascia A) VQR (or equivalent) single authored: 6 CFU

  • Publication in Group A (fascia A) VQR (o equivalente) single-authored: 6 CFU
  • Publication in non-Group A (fascia non-A) VQR (o equivalente) single-authored: 4 CFU

  • Publication in Group A (fascia A) VQR (or equivalent) co-authored: 4 CFU

  • Publication in non-Group A (fascia non-A) VQR (o equivalente) co-authored: 2 CFU

  • PRIZES: 2 CFU per award


6. PhD Thesis and Final Exam (15 CFU)

Comprises:

  • Submission of the thesis is considered part of the activity denoted above under header 4) and thus does not carry any extra CFU;

  • Preparing for the final exam and discussion (VIVA), including the revisions made to the dissertation following the comments made by the external examiners: 15 CFU.


7. Teaching Activity

Comprises:

  • Tutor Didattico: 1 CFU per 10 hours of contact hours; max 6 CFU per year.
  • Teaching Assistant: 5 CFU per year

Any other activity not reported above has to be approved and evaluated by the Council.
